Coachella Decides to Keep the Party Going For an Extra Weekend

Due to popular demand and consistently sold out passes, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has decided to expand the festival to two weekends in 2012. The festival will be held two weekends in a row on April 13 – 15 and April 20 – 22. The additional weekend will not just be an extension of the good fun, but an identical line up from the weekend before.

This is a great idea, but a pretty ambitious one. Coachella sold out within six days for the 2011 festival, but will it sell out for two weekends in a row? The festival sells 75,000 passes per day, which is a total of 225,000 for the weekend. Looking at Facebook and Twitter, Coachella doesn’t even have that amount of followers on their sites. Did they set the bar too high? Paul Tollett, President of Goldenvoice and the founder of Coachella, understands the growing demand and has taken a step to meet that demand.

"We had too many people who wanted to go [in 2011]. We feel that [in 2012] there will be even more that want to go, so we're trying to create more room for them. The options would be to sell more tickets on one weekend or have two weekends, and [the latter] is the option we went with." – Paul Tollett

Not only does this open up more tickets for avid festival goers, but it also gives the option of two different weekends for those with busier lives. This will help them to align their schedules for the event, bringing in more people for the additional weekend.

Do you think this is a good idea? Or would you rather there be two different line-ups for each weekend? Tickets go on sale tomorrow, June 3rd until June 10th. Check out Coachella for ticketing information.

I think this will turn out great, but they probably have a few issues to work out ahead of them. Hopefully all the musicians will agree to two weekends in a row and ticket sells will be overwhelming. I guess we’ll find out next week.
