Have you been watching The Voice? I do not watch music competition shows on television, BUT I gave The Voice a shot…and I love it. I really enjoy that there are very successful artists on the show to help “coach” the contestants. Each artist has a different background and genre, so it mixes things up. So far, it has got me hooked and I haven’t missed a show yet. But is The Voice enough to put NBC back on its feet?
The Voice is a singing competition where the judges do not see the contestant, but only hear them. As the judges face the opposite direction, the artist(s) sing their song, and each judge votes on them if they want them on their team. If more than one judge votes, then the artist gets to pick whose team they want to be on. Once the blind auditions are completed, they do battle rounds and the teams are cut in half, from eight down to four per team. Then the live shows begin, and America votes on who to keep.
In the past, NBC has tried to go up against the Fox hit, American Idol, with its own musical competition show, but those attempts failed. This made everyone at NBC a bit skeptical about the project at first, but very hopeful. The Voice of Holland was very popular overseas and successfully outranked American Idol, so they decided to jump at the opportunity.
The Voice premiered on April 26, 2011 and when the numbers rolled in the next day, they were shocked. Executives said they would have been completely happy with a rating of 3 points, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, “The show's first episode had premiered to a 5.1 (about 12 million total viewers) in 18-49 [demographic].” The show has continually gotten better, and has received great reviews.
The Voice was a big bet for NBC, costing around $2.3 million per episode. The celebrity judges, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton, cost a pretty penny to be on the show, but guess who cost the most? Aguilera is reportedly receiving $225,000 per episode, whereas the boys are all receiving about $75,000. But that is quite all right with NBC, they were willing to pay to put a quality show on television. I think they got it.
Do you think The Voice has what it takes to put NBC on the top?
